Did you know that Tucson, Arizona is world famous for its gem and mineral shows? The shows began in the 1950’s by the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society and have grown in popularity and attendance ever since. There are multiple shows within a show that are held in different locations throughout the city, so here is some important information to know before you book your trip!
· When: The various shows usually begin mid-January and go through mid-February. There is another round of shows that happen in late summer, as well.
· Where: Some of the bigger shows happen in the Tucson Convention center, but the smaller shows are located throughout the city, including hotels, city blocks, and the fairgrounds.
· Who Can Attend: Most of the shows are open to the public, but there are a few that are for jewelry industry professionals only, like the AGTA GemFair and Out of the Jewel Box Experience.
· Who Usually Goes: Gem and rock enthusiasts world-wide come to the Tucson gem shows every year to collect new things, see what is happening in the gem world, and to see their friends. While you wouldn’t recognize them, buyers for top jewelry designers come to the Tucson gem shows to get new gemstones for their upcoming designs and to be inspired. You will see Graduate Gemologists and various jewelry professionals, scientists and geologists, and people who are interested in gems and minerals not connected to the jewelry industry. (Yes, you can go!)
· What Will I See: Everything! This is THE place for gems, minerals, and fossils. You can find unique and hard to find things and things that you would find in a typical jewelry store. I have even seen colorful minerals cut into different shapes like gummy bears!
· Useful Tips: There is A LOT to see at these shows, so plan for a few extra days than you think you need, if possible. This will give you time to rest, as you will be walking a lot, and still be able to see what you want. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. The majority of people, including the buyers for the top jewelry brands, are wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes. Book your hotel early because they get pricier as it gets closer to the show. Everything you purchase must be taken you, vendors generally do not ship, so plan accordingly with your shopping. Most importantly, you cannot see everything, so plan your days at the various shows knowing that you can come again the following year.
