The Jewelry Horcruxes of Harry Potter

**Harry Potter spoiler alert

As you may have picked up, I love reading, and the Harry Potter series is one of my favorites. In fact, I am rereading the series for like the 20th time!  Currently, I have just started book 5, and the cleaning out of the Black home reminded me of the Horcruxes, and I began to look at them in a different way when I considered that two of the Horcruxes are jewelry.

As a reminder, a Horcrux is what an evil wizard creates in order to keep himself from death. To create a Horcrux, an evil wizard must commit murder to split their soul apart, so that even if he or she is killed, they never are gone because they have pieces of their soul housed in objects that keep them tethered to this world. Which is why Voldemort never died when his curse back fired when trying to kill the one-year old Harry Potter.  Voldemort did the unthinkable and created 7 Horcruxes with his first being created when he was 16.

Every Horcrux Voldemort created, meant something to him, and it is interesting that two of his Horcruxes were jewelry: his grandfather’s ring and Salazar Slytherine’s locket. Since he was raised in an orphanage, he didn’t find out that he was from an important wizard family line, the Slytherines on his mother’s side, till he was 16. The family connection he felt and had yearned for as a child, was twisted for revenge and immortality in his sociopathic mind upon finding these two jewelry pieces.  Jewelry is connection embodied in a physical state, and even for evil wizards, jewelry always means something more.

Of course, the Horcruxes and characters I am talking about are just works of fiction created by the author J.K. Rowling, but they do illustrate how powerful the connection of jewelry is.  Whether we were gifted a piece of jewelry or we chose a piece of jewelry, it connects us to ourselves and/or someone else.  That connection can last generations as jewelry is passed down, it can be the subtle, daily connection of your commitment and love to your spouse, and it can be a connection of an important celebration that you are proud of.
