The Beryl Sisters

Writer: Angela CisnerosAngela Cisneros

Did you know that aquamarine, emerald, and morganite are siblings?

Gemstones are no longer classified by color, like they have been historically. They are classified within their mineral species. The mineral species of both aquamarine and emerald is beryl which can be pink, red, blue, green, yellow, brown, and black. All naturally!  The reason beryl can be different colors is due to the trace mineral content. Beryl is a beryllium aluminum silicate at its base and when other trace minerals are added to the mix, various colors are grown in the earth with heat and pressure.

According to the Spring 2020 issue of Gems & Gemology, the Gemological Institute of America stated that, “…color ranged from blue to green to yellow due to different pro- portions of Fe ions with various valences and occupancies.”  Basically, the iron content makes beryl blue, and it can also give it a greenish-blue appearance, as well. The presence of chromium or vanadium gives emerald a bright green color.

Morganite is another beryl sister who can be light pink to peach in color.  Manganese is the trace mineral that brings out this color in beryl.  Morganite came into the spotlight about 10 years ago as a colorful alternative to diamond. It looks especially good in rose gold.

Most people are more concerned with a color that speaks to them than how it is created, and I understand! Seeing and holding incredible aquamarines and emeralds is something I will never tire of!  I am fascinated, though, by what is under the hood, so to speak.  It gives me a greater appreciation for gemstones and what it had to go through to be so beautiful.
