Lab Grown Diamond Clarification

Lab grown diamonds can be very exciting! They make a large, incredible diamond accessible to a larger portion of people, and thus, fulfill a lot of dreams! There are some things to be aware of when purchasing a lab grown diamond, though. Lab grown diamonds don’t equal high quality automatically, and we should not throw out the diamond quality factors referred to as the 4c’s

·       Carat: 6ct plus lab grown diamonds in fancy shapes have been harder to come by. I think as demand gets higher, they will become more plentiful

·       Clarity: Part of the clarity characteristic isn’t just the grade, like VS1 or SI2. Where the inclusions are stationed inside the diamond (right in the center or off to the side) and the relief (dark crystals or clear crystals) still matter. As a Graduate Gemologist who has been looking at diamonds for 27 years, I still wouldn’t purchase a lab grown diamond sight unseen.

·       Color: There are plenty of low color, lab grown diamonds in the market! They will look yellowish or brownish to the naked eye. If you are getting a lab grown diamond, I don’t see why you wouldn’t get a nice color grade.

·       Cut: Cut is the only part of a diamond characteristic that is controlled by a human, and no, diamonds don’t automatically sparkle.  Cut does not refer to the outside shape, like round or oval, but is the facet arrangements, depth percentages, and various angles that give a diamond sparkle. With that being said, I have seen many lab grown diamonds that are cut very poor showing shadows and dark spots (see picture above).  Fancy cut shapes (all shapes excluding round) are the ones that can be the most difficult to get a good cut in a diamond.  Even the videos many companies are providing can be doctored to look brighter than they actually are. Again, one should always see a diamond in person before purchasing!

Just because it is a lab grown diamond, it does not get high quality status. It is still important to have a professional help you get the biggest, most beautiful diamond in your budget!
