Ever since reading Shakespear’s, Julius Caesar, in high school, the phrase “beware the ides of March” seems to be stuck in my brain and comes out on repeat during the month of March. The ides of March is the 15th of March, and the phrase was the warning an oracle gave Julius Caesar in Shakespear’s play. And, that was the day he was murdered. Cheery subject, I know.

Julius Caesar was famous for his military and political genius as he shifted Rome from the Republic of Rome to the Empire of Rome. He was a man of strategy, and it is safe to say the jewelry he wore reflected that, as well. He famously wore an opal ring that has since been lost to history, and wearing it was a significant statement.
In the ancient world, opals were associated with the goddess Venus, so wearing an opal as his personal emblem was telling the observer that he had a divine right to rule. He was the man the gods and goddesses chose. Opals were also believed to have power, like granting the wearer invisibility and the ability to foretell events. Julius Caesar was a calculating man, he was advertising not only his divine right to rule, but also his invincibility and omniscient power.
While we don’t ascribe to the same types of symbolism the ancient world had, our jewelry is still a reflection of who we believe we are, both in fashion and in our personal philosophy. The very act of buying herself fine jewelry tells me that she believes she is worthy to spend money on. Jewelry is always personal and means something more!
