If you have been following me for a while, you’ll know that I LOVE to read, and one of my most favorite books is the Harry Potter series! I could write several blogs on what I like about the story, but I have always been fascinated by the connection between the houses and the gemstones that represent each. JK Rowling has been very detailed in almost every part of the story with its connections to myths and astrology, so I decided to research what I know as a Graduate Gemologist and what I know as a Harry Potter nerd!
Gryffindor values: bravery, helping others, chivalry
Gryffindor gemstone: Ruby
Burma, now called Myanmar, has been source for rubies since at least 600AD. Warriors of Burma would insert them into their skin because they believed it made them invincible in battle. The passion for what they believed caused them to step up and fight with courage which made them feel invincible. Gryffindors, like Harry and his friends, had the same passion for what they believed in which caused them to step up for justice, ultimately, defeating Voldemort.
Slytherin values: ambition, cunning, heritage, resourcefulness
Slytherin gemstone: Emerald
Slytherins highly value family heritage and connection to Salazar Slytherin, and emerald is the only gemstone that is distinctly tied to one historical figure, Cleopatra. One cannot talk about the history of emerald without including Cleopatra! The ancient Egyptians also found that emeralds tended to have a lot of inclusions but if the gemstone was oiled, it masked most of the major ones, giving it more market value with a clearer look. Slytherins mask the reality that there are no more pure blood wizarding families left with their boisterous claims and bullying, which gives them more value (in their eyes) and power.
Ravenclaw values: intelligence, knowledge, planning ahead, wit
Ravenclaw gemstone: Sapphire
A key value in Ravenclaw is their intelligence and knowledge, and I can’t think of another gemstone that becomes even more fascinating as one learns the science behind it. Knowledge is truly power with sapphire because now that we know sapphire comes in all colors of the rainbow, you can choose almost any color you want in your wedding ring because of its great durability. It is a great example of the beauty and importance of learning.
Hufflepuff values: hard work, patience, loyalty, fair play
Hufflepuff gemstone: Diamond
In a Twitter/X post dated April 25th, 2014, JK Rowling says that Hufflepuff is represented by diamonds. Diamonds are the most durable gemstones, take millions of years to grow, and wait patiently for hot magma to bring them to the surface. This is a spot-on reference to Hufflepuff who “…are true and unafraid of toil.” (The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone)
