Diamonds in Music

I have been in a bit of a music high these past few weeks. I have been listening to everything from Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, No Doubt, Florence and the Machine, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fleetwood Mac, and 90’s hip hop!  I have come across with a few favorite songs that talk about diamonds, and I was curious about what they meant.  Here is what I found out:

·       Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles: John Lennon says it was inspired by a drawing his son had made of his classmate Read more here

·       Diamonds by Rhianna: This song was about being happy after several unhealthy relationships Read more here

·       Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend by Marilyn Monroe in the musical, Gentlemen Prefer Blonds: The musical is about a woman who is followed by a detective across the Atlantic by ship because her boyfriend’s father wants to make sure she is not dating his son for money.  I found a feminist take on the song very interesting! ·       Diamonds by Sam Smith: Sam Smith wrote the song from the perspective of a wealthy woman who had been left by her husband and had taken all her diamonds. He was highlighting how we like to listen to cheesy music when we get sad. Watch here
