Gemstones are amazing, natural wonders! Throughout history, gemstones have been used in jewelry, in magic spells (ancient Sumerians), religious meaning (yes, even Christian), cultural beliefs, and ceremonies. The ancient Greeks thought amethyst would prevent drunkenness. In Burma (now, Myanmar), warriors inserted rubies into their skin to make them invincible in battle. Emerald was once believed to cure cholera and malaria. It makes perfect sense that human kind has revered these works of nature and applied meaning to them in some form. Gemstones still mean something to us today. Whether it is your birthstone or a family heirloom, we still celebrate them!
In the 1980’s, the idea of crystal healing surfaced again but this time with more reach due to books, magazines, and the New Age culture. Katrina Raphaell wrote Crystal Enlightenment: The Transforming Properties of Crystals and Healing Stones in 1984 which became widely popular. A slew of other authors and experts popped up, as well. Since crystal healing had fallen out of fashion, to most people, this was a new practice. Old traditions were researched and information was gathered, so that now, there are certain processes and procedures to crystal healing, and a dictionary-like meaning to each crystal. For example:
· Selenite plates are used to charge and/or cleanse the crystal
· Aquamarine is said to help you discover your true self
· Citrine is said to help you with creativity and abundance
· Clear Quartz is said to amplify any energy or intention
· Green Aventurine is said to bring prosperity and confidence
