Many people are confused by the term lab grown diamonds, and they wonder if they are “real.” While I have written a few different blogs, I wanted to write an easy reference guide. As a Graduate Gemologist, it is easy to get lost in the gemological information!
Same Components: A lab grown diamond has the same crystal structure and the same chemical composition as a natural diamond, but it is grown by a machine rather than the earth.
Looks the Same: No, you won’t be able to tell the difference between a lab grown and natural diamond just by looking at it. Depending on how the lab grown diamond was created, there are some things gemologists can look at, and there are testing equipment available.
No Pretending: A lab grown diamond isn’t a gemstone pretending to be a diamond, like cubic zirconia or Moissanite, it is actually a diamond.
Price Difference: Lab grown diamonds are drastically lower in price than natural diamonds. When they first came on the market, they were about the same as natural, but since then, the prices have dropped dramatically and are forecasted to continue to drop.
Better for the Environment?: Lab grown diamonds are not without their own carbon footprint! One of the methods of creating diamonds is the High Pressure High Temperature method, or HPHT. It uses huge machinery that is made out of metal that weighs as much as 70 tons, which is mined from the ground. The other method, Chemical Vapor Deposition, or CVD, doesn’t use massive machinery but both methods us a lot of energy. As far as benefitting communities go, lab grown diamonds employ a few scientist and operators, where as the natural diamond industry employs millions of people world wide providing education, health, and a better life in the most deserving parts of the world.
I will never get over my fascination with natural diamonds! Scientists have learned a lot by studying diamonds because they are formed so deep in the earth. One in every ten thousand diamonds mined is a 1 carat size, and that doesn’t take into account quality factors! A high quality diamond is truly unique and rare.
With that being said, I do love that my clients can get a big diamond without settling because the price is so low. Some jewelers won’t offer lab grown diamonds because they are opposed to them, but I am of the mindset that this is your purchase not mine. Jewelry always means something more and is an investment into your relationship.
